In Every Place

My name will be great among the nations, from where the sun rises to where it sets. In every place incense and pure offerings will be brought to me, because my name will be great among the nations,” says the Lord Almighty. Malachi 1:11 (NIV)

A friend of our family finds it quite entertaining to insert himself into pictures of his friends on social media using Photoshop.

When scrolling through posts, we may see a young couple, who are expecting their first child, and have posted pregnancy photos. Our hilarious friend takes one of their pictures and inserts himself into the background on a four-wheeler. Or sometimes he does the same thing with wedding photos. There he is, right behind the bride, holding up a big fish he caught.

He tags them, reposts the photo to social media, and waits for funny comments.

It’s to the point where he’s gotten a reputation for inserting himself where he doesn’t belong for a laugh. And honestly, it works well.

Spiritually, I’m reminded of myself, sadly.

How many times have I done this same thing with God, inserting myself into something He’s doing? Not for laughs but for acknowledgement.

Ugh.

It’s embarrassing to admit God has brought this to my attention. It’s human nature though.

Maybe we’re trying to appease people instead of pleasing God.

The truth is God knows and that’s all that matters.

He also knows our reason for inserting ourselves even when we don’t realize we’re doing it. He knows our intentions when we don’t even recognize them.

God is allowing us a great privilege to participate in His work on Earth no matter what we’re doing. We may be serving meals to the homeless or writing a devotion. We may be teaching a Sunday School class or taking out the trash after church services.

No job is too small for the important work of God.

We can use social media for many things. A friend giving a good laugh is a good thing, for sure. But we can also use it for God’s purposes and making Him known in every place.

Heavenly Father, convict me when I seek glory for myself. In the powerful name of Jesus, Amen.
